US-India partnership for water purification

Water Systems India P.Ltd. (WSI) is a Chennai/India-based engineering firm that specializes in the design, fabrication and installation of water systems including wastewater. Subi provided assistance to promote this wholly-owned subsidiary of US-based Water Systems International. The company has rapidly grown and is now firmly established in India. Subi also helped WSI to sign a partnership agreement with Global Enviro Science Technologies Inc. USA for bidding desalination projects in India.

US-Asia partnerships/projects

As the program director (2003-04) for the “State Environmental Initiative (SEI)” program at the Council of State Governments, USA, Subi facilitated 30 US-Asia energy and environmental projects (over $4 million) in the energy and environmental sectors. Some of the successful projects that were facilitated by Subi in Asia with US expertise include:

Arizona – Sri Lanka: Rural Renewable Energy Project

The Arizona Department of Commerce and Southwest Windpower Inc., Flagstaff, AZ implemented a rural power project in Battalagunduwa, a remote island village in Sri Lanka. Joining hands with a team of local people, the Arizona firm installed an efficient wind turbine system to produce electric power. Since June 2004, the project is supplying clean energy to meet the basic needs of at least 21 houses, 3 mini theatres and a church. Earlier, the local community was depending solely on unreliable and polluting diesel generators that consumed expensive diesel oil delivered sporadically through boats.

Arizona – India: New Delhi Remote Sensing Pilot Demonstration

For the first time in India, an environmental firm from Arizona (Environmental System Products, Inc.) successfully demonstrated a state-of-the-art remote sensing system for detecting vehicular emissions on Indian roads. The US Embassy and the local media provided excellent reviews of the project. The project will be of great assistance to the local Government to make cost-effective policy decisions to combat vehicular related air pollution, and compile data in fleet characterization.

California – India: Industrial wastewater treatment and recycling.

Using a SEI grant award, New Logic, Inc. California successfully demonstrated a technology called “Vibratory Shear Enhanced Processing (VSEP)” at various locations in India. The demos led to contracts valued around $3,000,000 from South India’s textile industry. Customers include a textile mill in Karur and a Common Effluent Treatment Plant in Tirupur, Tamil Nadu.

Minnesota – Thailand: Restoration of Thailand’s old wells.

With a small grant award, SEI encouraged Flatwater’s participation at the “Aquatech Asia” (October 2003). Technology demonstrations followed after the trade show. Local contacts made during the trade mission helped Flatwater to appoint distributors and reach terms for the sale of well rehabilitation equipment valued at nearly $4,000,000. California – India: Bio-mass micro-turbine project for distributed power generation

Through a well-organized workshop (April 2004) in Calcutta/India, the project successfully demonstrated the concept and utility of distributed power generation through micro-turbines. Following the workshop, a team of senior Indian federal and West Bengal state governments visited California in June 2004 to meet with micro-turbine manufacturing companies and observe micro turbine installations in the US. As a sequel, in late 2004, the West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency (WBREDA) reached an understanding with Capstone Turbine Corporation of the US to promote the use of micro turbine technology for rural electrification.

Maryland-India: Low-cost Community Water Supply System

In February 2004, Subramanian visited the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) in Hyderabad and helped launch a low-cost community project to treat and re-use the wastewater generated in the JNTU campus in an environmental-friendly way. The unique system developed by a Maryland company removes pollutants through an anerobic and aerobic digestion in a deep pond. The reuse component of the treated effluent adds a significant benefit to the user community.
